Tallow Balm vs Tallow Cream: Which Do You Need?

Short answer: both do the job, but they do it differently. Here’s how to figure out which one your skin is actually asking for.

The Quick Version

Tallow cream is your everyday moisturiser. Tallow balm is your rescue remedy. Most people end up wanting both - just for different things.

What’s Actually in Each One

Both start with the same hero ingredient: grass-fed beef tallow. The difference is in what else goes into the formula and how that changes the texture and weight.

A tallow cream is whipped and blended with additional oils to create something lighter and easier to spread. It absorbs relatively quickly and sits comfortably under makeup or as part of a morning routine.

A tallow balm is denser. Fewer added ingredients, more concentrated, and designed to sit on the skin rather than disappear into it. It creates a barrier, seals in moisture, and stays put. Which is exactly what you want when your skin is raw, cracked, or just completely done with the world.

The Fat Cow Face Cream

Our Face Cream is whipped grass-fed tallow blended with sweet almond oil. The texture is light enough to use morning and evening without feeling like you’ve put a slab of something on your face.

It works well for daily moisture, as a base under SPF, and for keeping skin comfortable through the kind of weather Britain specialises in. Most skin types get on with it well; it’s rich without being heavy, and it doesn’t clog.

The Fat Cow Body Cream

The Body Cream is whipped grass-fed tallow blended with jojoba oil - a lightweight, non-greasy oil that helps it absorb easily and spread without effort. It’s the one you reach for when you want to cover more ground: arms, legs, stomach, anywhere that gets neglected during the average rushed morning. If your legs feel like sandpaper every winter the moment the heating goes on, this is where to start.

The Fat Cow Balm

The Balm is a different beast. Thicker, more concentrated, and built for targeted use. Think: heels, knuckles, elbows, lips, the patch of skin behind your ear that always goes dry in November for reasons nobody can explain.

It’s also excellent as an overnight treatment. Apply it to your face before bed, more generously than you think you need, and let it work while you sleep. Most people wake up wondering why they haven’t been doing this for years.

It’s not something you’d typically spread all over your body in the morning, but as a finishing layer on the bits that need it most, it’s hard to beat.

Which One For Which Skin Type

If your skin is generally normal to dry and you want one product for daily face moisture, start with the Face Cream.

If your skin is very dry, reactive, or you’re dealing with eczema-prone patches or a damaged skin barrier, the Balm gives you more concentrated support and you can layer it over the cream if you want both.

If you’re shopping for your body, the Body Cream for daily use and the Balm for problem areas is a combination that works well together.

In summer, or if you run naturally oily, you might find the cream is enough for everything. In winter, when central heating is stripping the air and your skin is suffering for it, the balm earns its place.

Can You Use Both?

Yes, and plenty of people do. Cream in the morning, balm at night. Or cream as your base and balm on top wherever you need the extra support.

They’re designed to work together, which is exactly why we put them in a kit.

Still Can’t Choose?

Try the herd together. The Cream & Balm Kit gives you both the Face Cream and the Balm so you can figure out what your skin actually wants without committing to one before you’ve tried the other.

Grass-fed. British made. No nonsense.
